Traditional historiography has claimed that the agrarian areas developed by the Muslims in Al Andalus had been "inherited" by the Christian conquerors and that in most of the conquered territories they continued to use them. However, research conducted in recent decades suggests that this inheritance was not as direct as it seemed and that there was no such continuity in the use of farmland. In actual fact, as detected by means of various methodologies, a series of transformations occurred. This book studies some examples of transformations made to the agrarian landscape, including the hydraulic systems of the Mediterranean or the Atlantic islands, dryland farming to increase cereal production and to expand vineyards, grazing areas for livestock development in sparsely populated regions, as well as any other type of native productive land that was captured during the expansion of Latin Christendom and later adapted and reused by peasant settlers or dominated native groups. It also examines the evolution of these agrarian areas over time. | Il·lustracions en color |
