A deep institutional, political, ideological and socioeconomic crisis marked the final stage of the oligarchic liberal regime of the Restoration, which was finally brought to an end in an authoritarian manner. Through a study of the case of the province of Castelló, this book makes a valuable contribution to identifying the keys points that define how they confronted it and what role the dynastic forces – liberal and conservative – played. By searching for elements that shed light over these issues, Gerard Llansola highlights the presence of a process of adaptation of the liberal and traditional factions of Castelló to relatively mobilised political contexts, driven by the need to put up a fight in the scenarios characterising mass politics. Yet, neither the conservatives nor the liberals, as shown by the study, were willing to renounce the privileges that the system offered them in the electoral and institutional spheres in order to make the regime evolve towards levels of corruption and despotism that are more in line with truly democratic contexts. | Il·lustracions en blanc i negre |
