In an extraordinary situation, the representatives meeting in Cadiz were able not only to decide fundamental questions like the definition of Hispanic identity but also to structure and specify the rights and duties of citizens while taking on radical reforms that were impossible to carry out in ordinary contexts. Revolutionary changes were proposed, with great influence on the social and political structure to the present day. The debates were particularly important, in particular one relating to the Court of the Holy Inquisition, which was abolished in most of Europe for being against the elementary principles of Liberalism and civil rights. After a long and brilliant debate, the representatives of national sovereignty at Cadiz freely chose to abolish the Inquisition. The study of this debate and its impact contributes to an understanding of Spanish history and several problems that still persist in our society. | | Video entrevista de Manuel Chust a Fernando Peña |
