The eighteenth century was hugely ungrateful due to two primary facts: the extinction of the Kingdom of Valencia as a political entity and the annulment of Valencian as the language of the government and justice, to be replaced by Castilian. That way, the Bourbon monarchy was trying to build a new uniform state. From the point of view of the transmission of culture and literature, the prestige factor was then acting in a negative way for a couple of centuries, because the nobility had remained dazzled by the Castilian and by the culture that was radiated from the Castilian court, thereby entailing a rapid oblivion of the last Valencian authors, and the literary continuity was hindered. This work, rewarded with the I Award Germà Colón of Philological Studies, analyses the works and the discreet figure of Teodor Tomàs Palomar, Valencian canon who devoted his time to the modernisation and edition of medieval texts in Catalan with the intention of rescuing them from oblivion and of projecting them towards the readership of the eighteenth century, without giving up the language in which they had been written; and all this happened when the claim and the temptation of Castilian were very powerful.
