The Millars is an irregular, unpredictable, often violent river, but also one that is regulated, contested, and negotiated. The weirs of Vila-real, Castelló, Almassora, Borriana, and Nules represent infrastructure resulting from investment in technical improvements that, between the 15th and 17th centuries, marked a trend toward innovative construction, replacing weak weirs made of ephemeral materials with veritable fortifications.
