In this book, Mexican independence is considered within the framework of the liberal revolutions of the nineteenth century. The independence process began in 1820 with the ideas of the Novohispanic autonomist movement at the Parliament of Madrid in 1820. The participation of Novohispanic members in that parliament was decisive in the group achieving its autonomist aspirations. Later, the first Mexican constituent body would face the challenge of building its own nation-state, which was independent from the Spanish monarchy, but which had a marked Hispanic character. The liberal movement which began in Cádiz was continued in order to make Mexico a federal republic.
